In 1989, the community gathered to celebrate Dr. Edward Nelson Diters on the occasion of his retirement, after over 40 years of dedicated service as Canton’s family doctor. In his honor, the community generously donated the initial funding to create the Dr. Diters Legacy Scholarship.
Dr. Diters defined a life well lived: WWII Veteran and Air Force Flight Surgeon in Korea. State of Connecticut Assistant Medical Examiner. Canton’s beloved family, community and school physician. He knew that there were a lot of wonderful people in the world and felt lucky because he knew them all.
Today, Canton Community Health Fund, Inc. continues to honor the work and devotion to community that defined Dr. Diters by providing Scholarships to graduating high school students pursuing a future in healthcare or public service/safety fields, through further education, training or certification, and who have demonstrated commitment to community service.
WHO CAN APPLY?
Applicants eligible for the Dr. Diters Legacy Scholarship must be either:
WHEN TO APPLY.
Dr. Diters Legacy Scholarship applications are accepted once a year, beginning March 1st.
WHAT IS THE DEADLINE TO APPLY BY?
All applications must be received no later than April 1st of the Scholarship awarding year, in order to be considered.
WHAT IS THE MAXIMUM/MAXIMUM DR. DITERS LEGACY SCHOLARSHIP AVAILABLE?
Dr. Diters Legacy Scholarship awards are for $1,000.00.
PURPOSES FOR WHICH THE SCHOLARSHIP MAY BE AWARDED.
Dr. Diters Legacy Scholarships are an investment in the well-being of our community, through Canton Community Health Fund’s financial support of graduating high school students who are pursuing further education in healthcare or public service/safety.
Scholarships cover tuition expenses, The Dr. Diters Legacy Scholarship check will be made out to your school or certification program.
CRITERIA FOR EVALUATING DR. DITERS LEGACY APPLICATIONS.
Applicants are evaluated based upon their vocational or career plans in the healthcare or public service/safety fields, academic standing and community service.
The Dr. Diters Legacy Scholarship is administered by our trusted partner Canton Dollars for Scholars.
DEADLINE FOR USE OF SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS.
All Scholarship funds must be used during the June/2025 to December/2025 calendar year.
If you are unable to use the Dr. Diters Legacy Scholarship for its intended purpose, the funds must be returned to Canton Community Health Fund. Failure to properly use or return undistributed funds will disqualify you from applying for other Scholarship funding from Canton Community Health Fund.
